One woman I swapped numbers with told me after a few minutes on the phone: At my age, you want romance first. Another was a nurse who was about to start a two-year placement in the West Indies. They feel desperately lonely, but sit at home crying into a cup of tea instead of getting out there. They lose their confidence. I do understand, but it makes it difficult to find someone. In fact, it makes it soul-destroying. Surfing online dating sites, I saw the face of an attractive middle-aged women I knew I recognised.
Email Istock A reddit user named OKCThrowaway decided to prove just how easy women have when it comes to online dating after talking with a friend about her experiences with romance in the digital age. We guess he figured that most of the time it’s the men chasing and messaging women on dating sites, so women don’t have to do any of the work to start a conversation.
They just sit there and wait for the right guy to talk to them. So he created a profile for a female version of himself, used a picture of his friend who calls herself “pretty average looking,” and dove into online dating from a female perspective.
I guess online dating was the rude awakening necessary to remind myself that I’m not seen as a full human being by most of the people who scroll past my face in search of their new girlfriend.
Then say so in your online dating profile. And no, I’m not just talking about women who are looking for casual fun, although that’s a perfectly acceptable choice. I’m talking about any sexually charged woman who believes that good sex is a vital component of a romantic relationship and doesn’t want to settle for anything less. My opinion about sexual transparency is practically heresy in the heterosexual dating advice world, where women are routinely admonished for letting it be known that they like sex.
Last week I read a piece written by a dating coach for the over set. While I agreed with most of her advice, I bristled as she urged women to “leave sex out of your profile” because “it gives men the wrong impression and encourages those you aren’t interested in. AND you will attract men who are incapable of seeing women as anything more than penis receptacles.
This kind of reductionist thinking is horribly unfair to both sexes and, IMHO, is one reason men and women don’t trust each other. Women are socialized to believe that men are jerks and men resent women scrutinizing them for covert jerkiness. Where I do agree with dating coaches is on the importance of marketing. You have one shot — a fleeting shot, given the cyber candy store otherwise known as online dating — to make yourself stand out.
But you don’t want to stand out to everyone; you just want to stand out to the type of person who shares your values — sexual and otherwise.
By Rachel Thompson The listing of height in dating app profiles has become so prevalent, that many swipers come to expect it, and sometimes hypothesise when it’s been omitted from the profile. Online dating FOMO is ruining my chances of finding a date In my own experience, I have grown to attach a great deal of importance to the feet and inches in a person’s bio. As I idly swipe through Bumble, I will scroll through a dater’s photos before perusing their bio, searching for a number that might dictate the crucial decision: I’m 5ft8, and I often swipe left which means no on men under 6ft.
Rachel: Undeniably, the most important changes have been technological—specifically online dating, and also e-mail exchanges—where friends introduce friends and network through e-mail. So for those of you who are a little rusty on the computer, you will definitely want to get a tech-savvy friend or relative to get you up to speed.
There are women out there — not many, but a few — who are really good at handling men. Perhaps they have brothers. Maybe they have lots of guy friends. They could have had a number of long-term relationships. Why do guys do what they do? Why are they so confusing? But just like I was one of those guys. I also know that despite seeming like a player, I was always looking for a relationship, I never wanted to hurt anyone, and would never openly criticize a woman I was dating.
On paper, there was nothing wrong with these women.
